Our largest organ, the skin, is directly exposed to sunlight, allowing us to synthesize a certain amount of vitamin D. The fast-paced lifestyle of modern living, sunscreen use, and protective filters are major contributors to the decreasing natural intake of vitamin D.
Vitamin D supplementation is a common choice in many cases, especially for children in development, athletes, or individuals with chronic illnesses. Its primary function is to boost the immune system if it’s weak, while also moderating the activities of immune cells when the system is overactive.
Vitamin D has immune-modulating properties, which means it has a very specific role in the immune system. Its effects are particularly notable in the presence of cold viruses. Vitamin D prevents the excessive production and accumulation of cytokines and chemokines in the lungs, which is often the cause of major complications related to colds.
Recent studies published in the Journal of Infection and Public Health have shown that supplementation with vitamin D3 exhibits protective properties against respiratory infections. A daily intake of 25-50 µg is recommended without significant side effects.
According to Croatian guidelines for the use of vitamin D, the recommended concentration of vitamin D in the blood should be between 75 nmol/L – 125 nmol/L for optimal protection against infectious diseases. For adults at risk of vitamin D deficiency, preventive doses range from 1,500 – 2,000 IU of vitamin D (400 IU = 10 µg). The recommended daily intake at the EU and Croatian level is 5 µg per day, which represents 100% of the recommended daily intake (% RDI). For adults with proven vitamin D deficiency, general practitioners and dietitians prescribe initial high doses of vitamin D, followed by maintenance doses of 1,500 – 2,000 IU.

Vitamin D3 deficiency most commonly affects:

  • Older population
  • Overweight individuals
  • People who spend a lot of time indoors
  • Adults who do not expose their skin to sufficient sunlight

  • Vitamin D status in patients with chronic plaque psoriasis. Gisondi P, Rossini M, Di Cesare A, Idolazzi L, Farina S, Beltrami G, Peris K, Girolomoni G. From the Department of Medicine, Section of Dermatology and Venereology Section of Rheumatology III Division of Geriatrics, University of Verona, Verona, Italy Department of Dermatology and Internal Medicine and Public Health, University of L’Aquila, L’Aquila, Italy.2011.
    • Result: A cross-sectional study conducted over 1 year included 145 patients with chronic plaque psoriasis, 112 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and 141 healthy control individuals. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in psoriasis patients was 57.8% compared to 37.5% in RA patients and 29.7% in healthy controls. During winter, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency increased to 80.9% in psoriasis patients, 41.3% in RA patients, and 30.3% in healthy controls. In logistic regression analysis, vitamin D deficiency was associated with psoriasis independent of age, gender, body mass index, calcium levels, PTH levels, and blood sampling season.
  • Vitamin D supplementation did not prevent influenza-like illness as diagnosed retrospectively by questionnaires in subjects participating in randomized clinical trials, Jorde R, Witham M, Janssens W, Rolighed L, Borchhardt K, Boer IH, Grimnes G, Hutchinson MS. Endocrinology Research Group, Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Tromsø, and Medical Clinic, University Hospital of North Norway , Tromsø Norway. 2011.
    • Result: 569 participants from 10 different clinical trials were included in the study, with 289 randomized to receive vitamin D and 280 to receive placebo. A flu-like illness during the previous fall/winter was reported by 38 participants in the vitamin D group and 42 in the placebo group. Among participants receiving placebo, the duration of illness was longer compared to those in the vitamin D group.

    • Result: A total of 171 children under the age of two were examined for 25-hydroxyvitamin D between 2007 and 2009. There were 120 children in the normal group and 51 children in the vitamin D deficiency group. Vitamin D deficiency was most commonly diagnosed in the spring. Ten children in the deficiency group experienced bone changes. Six children received calcitriol medication in the normal group, where the average level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D increased after using the medication, and 13 in the deficiency group, where the average level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D increased to the middle level after treatment.
  • Vitamin D, sun, sunbeds and health. Moan J, Baturaite Z, Juzeniene A, Porojnicu AC. 1Department of Radiation Biology, Institute for Cancer Research, 2011. The Norwegian Radium Hospital, Oslo University Hospital, Ullernchausseen 70, Montebello N-0310 Oslo, Norway.2011.
    • Result: UV radiation from the sun and tanning beds is the main source of vitamin D. Young people with fair or pigmented skin in Northern Europe often have low vitamin D levels. A range of health benefits of adequate vitamin D levels has been identified. However, there is concern that UV exposure causes skin cancer, especially melanoma, and authorities warn against it. The overall health benefits of improved vitamin D status may outweigh the potential increased risk of skin cancer resulting from careful increased UV exposure. Important scientific facts support this conclusion.
