- Result: Natural astaxanthin reduces inflammation caused by UVB radiation; it rejuvenates the skin by minimizing the effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Excessive ROS degrades the collagen matrix and increases levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), leading to wrinkle formation and loss of elasticity.

- Result: Consumption of tomato paste providing a dose of 16 mg of lycopene per day for 10 weeks resulted in increased serum levels of lycopene and total carotenoids in the skin. By the 10th week, the incidence of erythema was significantly lower in the group consuming tomato paste compared to the control group. Therefore, protection against UV-induced erythema can be achieved through the intake of a common dietary source of lycopene.

- Result: Processed tomato products such as tomato juice, tomato paste, tomato puree, ketchup, and tomato oil extracts have shown to be bioavailable sources of lycopene, resulting in increased plasma lycopene levels compared to baseline. Fats in food facilitate this process, and they should be consumed together with lycopene food sources. Mechanisms of action include protection of plasma lipoproteins, lymphocyte DNA, and serum proteins from oxidative damage, as well as anticarcinogenic effects.

What is astaxanthin?
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid naturally produced in plants and microalgae. It is a powerful antioxidant, and its lipophilicity makes it ideal for protecting lipid membranes from oxidative damage. It belongs to the group of carotenoids and is structurally similar to beta-carotene. It has a reddish-orange color and is found in natural sources, not only in plants but also in marine sources. Mammals cannot synthesize it, so it needs to be ingested through food or dietary supplements. The richest natural source of astaxanthin is the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis, which contains more than 80% astaxanthin.
What is beta-carotene?
Beta-carotene is a natural form of carotenoid originating from the microalga Dunaliella salina. It is a precursor of vitamin A and is believed to have excellent effects on skin aging and photoaging. Research has shown that beta-carotene has a protective effect against sunburn, thanks to its strong antioxidant action. Besides protecting the skin, it is also beneficial for protecting the eyes, brain, and bones, which is why it is often referred to as the “natural sunscreen.”
Carrot root extract – benefits
Although carrot root extract is commonly associated with macerates, balms, and other topical preparations, its beneficial effects are also evident when taken orally. Due to its richness in antioxidants and vitamin A, carrot is an excellent ally for the skin, especially during the summer months. In 1830, beta-carotene was isolated from carrots. It is a potent antioxidant that protects our cells from aging, and it is of utmost importance to obtain it from a natural source such as carrots. Another vitamin abundant in carrots is vitamin C, which participates in collagen synthesis.
Rosehip fruit extract – benefits
Rosehip contains antioxidants and can help the skin recover from UV radiation damage and reduce redness after sun exposure. It is extremely rich in vitamin C, which is linked to the latest dermatological discoveries such as its ability to “counteract” the negative effects of sun exposure. As a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C neutralizes free radicals and thus prevents skin damage.
What is lycopene?
Lycopene is the primary carotenoid in tomatoes, known for its strong photoprotective effects. Due to its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it is often used in carotenoid research.
One of the causes of several eye diseases is oxidative stress, and lycopene plays an important role in preventing it. Numerous studies show that lycopene also helps intensify skin pigmentation, protect the skin from sunburn, and mitigate the harmful effects of UV rays.
